In Asheville self defense programs, teens are treated like adults and train alongside them. You will see your teen grow by leaps and bounds here—faster than you ever thought possible. As their training in youth martial arts training progresses, they will become role models for new students and mentors for younger students. Many of our 14-15-16 year-old black belts are often mistaken for fully grown adults by visitors, even after having face-to-face conversations with them.

7-year-old Bodhi performing a 360-degree Spin Side Kick Board Break at his belt test is a testament to our approach in Asheville Self Defense. The board is made of solid pine, measuring 8"x12" and 1" thick! We ran a unique traditional martial arts 'Kid's Program' for 5 years, achieving remarkable success as students progressed at incredible rates. However, we soon realized that the kids in our Family Program were advancing even more quickly. This insight led us to break away from modern massed martial arts training and transition all the kids into our Family Program. Since then, we have never looked back. Here, 7-year-olds perform at levels comparable to 12-year-olds elsewhere, and 6-year-olds take (and pass) the same belt promotion tests that teenagers do. Many of our students participate in youth martial arts training and even travel to compete in tournaments alongside their older teammates, achieving great success and winning many brackets in various styles of martial arts, including our teen self defense programs.

I WANT SOMETHING BETTER THAN 'STRUCTURED' GAMES, BUT CAN AN 8-YEAR OLD ACTUALLY LEARN REAL SELF-DEFENSE? Yes! One way to assess your child's self-defense training is to watch the program they're in: if, say, a 6-year-old is able to enter that class and take part without continuous help and guidance from an instructor, it's not true self-defense. Parental support is a vital part of their success, especially in Asheville self-defense programs, and the younger they are, the more important it is. At ages 5 and 6, we ask one parent or guardian to join with them; it's a critical component of their success - and of your developing a new relationship with them at home. At 7 - 9, they still like to play but are becoming more serious students and can usually function on their own in class. DO ALL MARTIAL ARTS PROGRAMS BASICALLY TEACH THE SAME THING? Not even close! The difference between our youth martial arts training system and most others is significant: while 30 minutes of games can be useful (and we do use some here), they only access reflexes and coordination. This leads to only temporary surface learning. That's about 1/10th of what we provide! Kids here don’t just learn coordination; they learn 'same-time eye-hand-foot coordination,' consequential thinking, situational awareness, and the confidence to move without being able to see. We accomplish this through exercises that encourage the development of their other senses besides sight, smell, and hearing. Surviving a kidnap attempt often involves reacting BEFORE the stranger grabs them, which means they have to be aware and THINKING BEFORE it happens. That's just one part of our training; while your child is here, they will learn enough about human anatomy to use their smaller, lighter arms and legs in fighting off full-grown adults. They don’t have the muscle mass yet, so we teach them to fight smarter, not harder, preparing them for situations they might encounter in teen self-defense programs.
